Total Body Skin Exams
What is a total body skin exam (TBSE)?
It is exactly what it sounds like. It is a total body skin examination to check for moles or unusual conditions on the skin surface. You should get a total body skin exam at least once a year. However if there are any suspicious moles, your dermatologist will suggest a follow-up schedule based on their findings during your exam, and also based on your personal and family history. The earlier you find skin cancer, the easier it is to treat it successfully. Clinical skin exams are useful in early detection of skin cancers, such as melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.
What to expect from a TBSE?
Expect a 10-20 minute visit including a review of your medical history and head-to-toe skin examination. This is a good time to ask about any suspicious spots you are concerned about.
